Summer Concert

This summer’s concert features the most melodic music from Bernstein’s West Side Story, Bob Chilcott’s Little Jazz Mass, and Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs Choral Suite.
All three are extremely successful composers whose pieces have been loved and played and listened to since they were first written. They’re harmonic, upbeat, impassioned, perfect for a summer’s event!

Bob Chilcott is one of this country’s most renowned and prolific composers and choral conductor; he has directed choirs in over 30 countries. His music has been performed by well-known groups like The King’s Singers, The Sixteen, the BBC Singers. He has a love for jazz and he expressed this in A Little Jazz Mass. It was first performed in 2004 in the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans, by 400 voices and a jazz trio. Since it has been widely performed as a concert work as well as, to his apparent surprise, liturgically in mass services. You will find the piece is upbeat, quite fast, harmonic, impassioned, and - quite jazzy!
Musical composer, conductor, pianist, author, humanist Leonard Bernstein has written for film, theatre, orchestras, ballet, choruses and more. For this summer concert the choir will perform a choral selection for quite operatic West Side Story. Composed in 1957, the music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim work together to achieve a rhythmic piece, infused with political satire. It is described as a perfect representation of American music.
Aaron Copland (1900 – 1990) is also known as the Dean of American Music. Music critic, teacher, pianist, conductor, his compositions were influenced by his expensive travelling through Europe, Africa, and Mexico. His harmonies create the most wonderful melodies, perfect for a summer’s event.
