BAFTA Award-winner Lesley Manville (Mrs Harris Goes To Paris, Phantom Thread) joins Aidan Turner (Rivals, Poldark) in a striking staging of Christopher Hampton’s celebrated bold adaptation of the scandalous 1782 French novel, where among the glittering salons of the super-rich, one misstep can mean ruin. This new production takes a play that has become a classic – inspiring films and TV series – and asks new questions of it.
At the heart of the drama are the Marquise de Merteuil (Manville) and the Vicomte de Valmont, (Turner) two aristocrats and former lovers, conniving co-conspirators who place bets and play games based on manipulation and sexual exploits, turning seduction into strategy and weaponising desire. But when their alliance collapses into rivalry, the battle between them threatens to destroy everyone in their path.
Filmed live on stage at the National Theatre, Marianne Elliott directs this thrilling game of love, lies, and social warfare with superb performances from its stars.
“Lesley Manville and Aidan Turner's chemistry is off the charts in this timeless tale of seduction. Tense, sexy and playful, this revival brings the best of the old and new”. (4 stars Radio Times)
