Join a free guided walk along Stanage Edge and Higger Tor, starting in the picturesque village of Hathersage in the Peak District.
We climb past the historic North Lees Hall, said to have inspired Jane Eyre's Thornfield Hall, before reaching the dramatic gritstone cliffs of Stanage Edge. From there we follow spectacular skyline paths with panoramic views across the Derwent and Hope Valleys, taking in High Neb, Crow Chin, and Robin Hood's Cave along the way, before finishing at the rocky summit of Higger Tor. It's a walk rich in local history and literary connection as much as scenery, passing the 16th century North Lees Hall, the resting place linked to Robin Hood's Little John at the Church of St Michael, the Bole Hill stone circle, and the Cowper Stone.
This is a moderate grade walk with uneven surfaces, gates, stiles, and a climb up to 400m, so a reasonable level of fitness and sturdy footwear both matter here. This walk is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund as part of our free walks programme.
