Helios x Sun Rings

Experience an unforgettable evening of music, voices and cosmic imagery as Phaedra Ensemble joins the Goole 200 Community Choir, brought together specially by Music in the Round and Junction for this unique celebration of Goole’s 200th anniversary year.

At the heart of the programme is Terry Riley’s Sun Rings, a mesmerising work for string quartet, choir and electronic sounds, originally commissioned by the NASA Art Program for the groundbreaking Kronos Quartet. Riley’s music combines human voices and live strings with recordings of sounds captured in space, creating a powerful and otherworldly musical experience.

The performance takes place beneath Luke Jerram’s stunning Helios installation, bringing the imagery of the Sun into the concert space. Inspired by NASA imagery, Helios offers an extraordinary backdrop to Riley’s music, connecting the vastness of the cosmos with the intimacy of live performance.

The Goole 200 Community Choir is a specially assembled group of local singers, created by Music in the Round and Junction to be part of this extraordinary event. Alongside the professional musicians of Phaedra Ensemble, they bring Riley’s expansive, atmospheric score to life, creating a shared experience that celebrates both the universal wonder of space and the community of Goole.

Phaedra Ensemble is a London-based collective renowned for pushing the boundaries of contemporary chamber music. Their bold and imaginative performances combine cutting-edge new works with modern classics from the past century, creating experiences that challenge expectations and bring contemporary music to life.

Part of the Junction Classical Music Series 2026/27 with Music in the Round, this special performance promises an evening where music, science, light and community meet — transporting audiences from Goole to the furthest reaches of the universe.

Sun Rings was originally commissioned by the NASA Art Program for the pioneering Kronos Quartet.
