African Footsteps

Heritage Open Day: Celebrating the ordinary and the resilient: African lives in Newcastle. On this short walk you will be fascinated by the careers and domestic lives of African workers and students in 18th, 19th and 20th century Newcastle. This short, accessible walk celebrates those Africans who quietly contributed to the well-being of Newcastle: William Fifefield who steered a ferry across the Tyne, John Roach who fed the working people. Both were fondly remembered at the time as was the Nigerian couple who held the 'Wedding of the Year' in 1950.

In celebrating ordinary lives as we journey through Newcastle churches and streets we recognise both how much we share and how much African lives and diversity is embedded in our city's history and heritage.

This taster walk, enriched by readings and pictures, with links to online resources and further walks, provides historical accuracy and encourages a deeper understanding of the people and places of our region.
