Deal Museum
Heritage Open Day: The Deal museum portrays the changing history of Deal, Walmer and the surrounding area, and is packed with fascinating glimpses into the past with special events happening across the weekends. Upstairs, the Local History gallery is home to our stable of Hooden horses and our mascot – Rattie, a flute playing stuffed rat.
Downstairs, in the Maritime Gallery, you can plot Deal’s development from an Iron Age settlement, to its role as Henry VIII’s principal defence against Europe and then inspiration for Austen and Dickens. Two Sternboards from the 1850’s are a rare find as is the Saxon King, the last of the Deal Galleys. The role of the RNLI is also commemorated with stories from the lifeboat stations along our coast.
