St George's German Lutheran Church

Heritage Open Day: Unique German church in London, unchanged since 1762 with box pews, wheezy organ and German memorials. This Grade 2* listed building was built by German sugar refiners in the eighteenth century who migrated to the East End of London where their skills were required. A large congregation worshipped here until the twentieth century. The church escaped damage in the Second World War when its pastor opened the building as a refuge for persecuted German protestants with a Jewish heritage. His friend the martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer visited him here often and is depicted in the vestry.
