Heritage Open Day: Elizabeth Wyatt Hall was Tewkesbury's first school for the working classes. We are using it to tell the story of the town's education from 1812, when it was conceived, to 1967, when it closed. The education of children from working class families in Tewkesbury began with the Abbey Sunday School, established in 1788. Dissenters had to wait until 1812, for a Baptist Sunday school and a 'British school', a day school purpose built, to teach children using the method devised by Joseph Lancaster. Extended and altered, now repurposed as a public hall, the school remains substantially as first built.
