Heritage Open Day: Along side the Hinton Mill open days we will be giving tours of the the Ancient Monument in the field next to the mill.
Site was abandoned in the 16th C and slowly demolished for its stone and tiles, It was a stop off house for the Earls of Devon. The site shows the mill and fish pond - necessary for the strict Catholic diet at the time. We will be showing some of the carved stones and tiles from the house. The late Mick Aston visited the site and was shocked by the quality of its construction and size, with roof tiles bought all the way from Cornwall. It was described as a palace not a manor house.
