St. Mary's Parish Church, West Horsley

Heritage Open Day: A thousand years of history of St. Mary's Church and its parishioners. 'This lovely church in ancient witness stands
Upon its lonely knoll beside The Way;
Some Saxon serf here kneltt and cupp'd his hands;
A Norman noble too, in knight's array.'

St. Mary's Church, West Horsley was built in 1030 AD by Thored, a Christian Dane, who was Thane of the Manor of 'Horselege.' After 1066, a Norman family became liege lords, and one, Hugh de Windsor-FitzOtha, around the end of the 12th century, commissioned a chancel, magnificent wall paintings, and stained-glass windows. The Lords of the Manor were patrons of St. Mary's over the centuries and contributed to the rich history and architecture of the building.
