Harpsichord Workshop, Cliffe

Heritage Open Day: An unusual late 16th century timber framed building with a crown-post roof, extensively rebuilt in 1990 and most recently used as a harpsichord and clavichord-making workshop. This building was bought in 1989 by Malcolm Rose and Karin Richter, and extensively rebuilt and restored in 1990, under the supervision of local architect David Russell, who had expert knowledge due to his involvement with Weald and Downland Living Museum near Chichester. Its original use is uncertain, but it may have been a market hall. The part of the building now facing English’s Passage is a later addition, possibly 18th century. The best views of the exterior of the old upper hall are from the North Court side.
