Heritage Open Day: An opportunity to explore the Knitting & Crochet Collection of hand, machine and crochet garments and household items, publications, yarn samples and shade cards, tools and gadgets. Meet the volunteers who care for the Collection. This year we feature a collection of items highlighting knitting and crochet as occupations, both professionally and as part of a cottage industry.
Our shade card and yarn sample collections illustrate how yarn was sourced and purchased before the advent of online shopping. Local yarn shops were an essential part of the crafting community, and yarn shop workers a source of knowledge and inspiration. Yarn was often ' put aside' by the shopkeeper to help with household budgeting.
