Meet the Volunteers Restoring Brunel's Swivel Bridge
Heritage Open Day: Talk to the Volunteers restoring Brunel's Swivel Bridge. Take a tour or the bridge and see some of the other industrial heritage around Bristol dock's entrance locks. Brunel's Swivel bridge was constructed in 1849 to cross his newly widened south entrance lock to Bristol's floating harbour. It is believed to be the first swivel bridge constructed from wrought iron and it incorporates Brunel's balloon flange girder design and other features unique to Brunel. The Brunel Swivel Bridge Group, who are restoring the bridge to working order for use by pedestrians and cyclists, have also surveyed other heritage remaining in the area from the many changes since Jessop completed the Floating harbour in 1809. Come for an informal chat with the volunteers and learn about the history of the entrance locks and Brunel's swivel bridge and see some of the normally hidden mechanisms that operated dock equipment in the past.
