Heritage Open Day: Railways and shipbuilding are inextricably linked to the story of St. Hilda's Jesmond (1905). Everyday histories of local people, Arts & Crafts features, a hanging pix and a magnificent triptych by artist Francis Newbery of Glasgow.School of Art. By 1900, the need for another church and Sunday School to serve the new housing area of West Jesmond was clearly evident. A short walk from West Jesmond station, the church was built to designs by Newcastle architects Hicks & Charlwood. The Grade II listed building features a spacious nave with a wooden barrel roof and rose window, both north and south aisles, a lady chapel and high altar, plus a fine pipe organ by the Newcastle firm of Blackett & Howden.
