Christ's Church Swanland

Heritage Open Day: Christ's Church was built in 1803 and, despite modifications and alterations, much of its original character and charm is retained. Visitors will find many features of interest, including a grave site, in this historic and beautiful, building. The reformation of the 16th and 17th centuries led to the development of non-conformist Christianity across Great Britain – including in Swanland where preachers who had been 'ejected' from the established church found a warm welcome. The religious rebels of East Yorkshire set up meeting places, and in 1693 an independent Chapel was founded in Swanland on the site where Christ Church now sits.

In 1803 the old chapel was demolished and replaced by a new building, the current Christ Church, known as 'the church by the pond'.
