Friary Walled Garden

Heritage Open Day: This garden is the secret garden of Maldon, hidden away behind the High Street. High brick walls and a black gate, the garden is set out with box hedges, gravel paths, old trees, looks pretty in the summer with planted borders, run by volunteers. Often referred to as Maldon's secret garden, the Friary Walled Garden is guaranteed to surprise everyone who encounters it for the first time, for it is an unexpected green oasis nestling amidst the concrete and tarmac of the town centre. It is small, just one fifth of an acre, but laid out as it is with narrow footpaths and box hedges defining the individual planting beds. Its seclusion derives from being bounded to the north, east and west by a high wall of brick and stone which may be eighteenth century in origin.
