Newcastle Bach Choir Autumn Concert 2026

This autumn’s programme celebrates not only the wonderfully varied repertoire of Bach’s music in his cantatas but also the texts of their librettos. The Leipzig author and poet Christiane Mariane von Ziegler wrote nine different cantata texts for Bach and they were performed over a period of just five weeks in Leipzig in April and May 1726. The texts of this remarkable female Enlightenment writer inspired Bach to produce some highly distinctive music. These works are very rarely performed and, as far as we know, have not been heard in the Newcastle Bach Choir’s 111-year history. While we only have time to perform three alongside the splendid F major ‘Short Mass’ this year, we plan to present more of the nine in future concerts.
Our performance on 14 November brings together some of the foremost specialist early music singers in the UK, including a welcome return of baritone Peter Harvey who sang so superbly in our B minor Mass last year. They are joined by recent Newcastle music and Samling Academy graduate Anna Dias and the fine instrumentalists of Newcastle Baroque. As usual, the latter will be playing on period instruments and making the most of Bach’s amazingly varied orchestration in the three cantatas, with virtuoso parts for piccolo recorder, solo trumpet and horns
