The Hermitage Ensemble is a choir consisting of Russian vocal virtuosi from St Petersburg - soloists from the top choral institutions and opera venues. The group have been performing their unique mixture of Orthodox chants and folk music, with some modern hits too, in churches across Europe for twenty years. Their sound has been described as "one moment like a Slavic barber shop quartet and the next like the massed ranks of the Red Army Choir". In this year where many will be focusing on the centenary of the Russian Revolution, or the current tensions between Russia and other nations, it will perhaps be a relief to spend an evening lost instead in the ancient musical traditions of this land. St Nicholas-at-Wade’s 13th century church is known for its beauty (it is listed in Simon Jenkins’s "England’s 1000 Best Churches"), excellent acoustics, friendly welcome, delicious refreshments, and wide variety of quality musical events.
Performance 7.00 p.m. to around 8.45 p.m. Refreshments will be available. Tickets £15 on the door (£12 in advance, from St Nicholas-at-Wade post office or Brown Paper Tickets); free admission to under 18s.
