Hans Holbein: Before he came to England
When we think of Hans Holbein our minds are immediately filled with an image Henry VIII standing legs apart and his hands on his hips. Yes Holbein created that iconic image of that Tudor king, but what of his artistic career before he came to England?
We will look at his training and the altarpieces, his frontispieces for the publisher Froben (still publishing 500 years later), his woodcuts, portraits of German patrons and explore why the philosopher Erasmus gave him letters of introduction
