Portsmouth Choral Union

The Portsmouth Choral Union is one of the leading amateur choruses in the South of England. The choir was founded in 1880 as the Portsmouth Temperance Choral Union.

We are a choir of 100 members and perform 4 or 5 concerts every year.

The musical direction of distinguished conductor David Gostick has extended the repertoire to cover most of the established choral masterpieces as well as a range of contemporary works. These include a new commission written by Ian Schofield: Te Deum (2000). More recently the choir performed Goodall: Eternal Light (2018) and Bernstein: West Side Story Choral Suite (2019): Bach, Christmas Oratorio (2021): Rachmaninov Vespers (2022).

The PCU frequently sings with the highly acclaimed professional orchestra, Southern Pro Musica. Performances have also been given with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Guildford Philharmonic Orchestras. The PCU has happy and productive relationships with the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra, Castle Primary School.
