The Bar Convent Living Heritage Centre

The Bar Convent on Blossom Street was established in 1686 as a school for girls. Today, the grade I listed buildings are open to the public. Visit our interactive exhibition to discover York’s fascinating religious history and how the convent survived times of turmoil, persecution and two world wars. Hear the incredible stories of the radical Yorkshire nun and pioneer Mary Ward, Yorkshire martyr Margaret Clitherow and the charitable work of the Sisters all across the world.
