Friends of the Peak District

The outstanding natural beauty of the Peak District National Park is a source of inspiration, relaxation and recreation for millions of people every year. Yet it remains vulnerable and is under constant threat. It is the most quarried national park in the UK, and its location between cities puts extra pressure on space, land and wildlife.

Friends of the Peak District started in 1924, and its founders Gerald and Ethel Haythornthwaite were the driving force behind the movement to safeguard the countryside and played a pivotal role in creating Sheffield's green belt and Britain’s first national park in 1951.

The Friends campaign against such threats to ensure our beautiful countryside is protected. We provide the vigilance and vigorous campaigning needed to safeguard the Peak District’s unique landscapes for future generations.

We offer talks to groups. Themes include:
1. History and work of the Friends
2. Peak District Boundary Walk
3. Quarrying in the Peak - good or bad?
