The story is told through the eyes of George Herbert, The Journalist, who recounts his survival of The Great Martian Invasion six years earlier. The dark Victorian tale begins after he spots several bursts of green gas erupting from Mars and is told by Ogilvy the astronomer that there’s nothing to worry about. But it soon transpires that these bursts of green gas are Martian cylinders on their way to invade Earth.
As The Journalist fights to survive, he meets The Artilleryman, Parson Nathaniel and The Parson's wife Beth, plus searches for his fiancée, Carrie who he’s lost amongst the Massacre of Mankind. Will the Martians win? Will the Humans be able to fend off the Martian Fighting Machines and their Heat Rays? Or will Humanity be engulfed in the Martian’s deadly vegetation, The Red Weed?
