The exciting virtuoso guitarists of the Contra Duo show how opposing yet complementary performers can create thrilling artistry. Their programme includes arrangements of famous classical pieces by Rossini, Albeniz and Assad, plus highly regarded recent guitar music, played in the mediaeval Adbaston Church (excellent acoustics), near Eccleshall, Stafford, ST20 0QE. Interval refreshments offered and free parking nearby.
Brisbane-based Contra Guitar Duo was formed by Hamish Strathdee and Emma-Shay Gallenti-Guilfoyle, each of whom has a career as classical guitar soloist and in chamber ensembles. This special concert is part of their current European tour.
The concert, from 5:30-7:30pm on Sunday 5th July, opens with Rossini’s sparkling Overture to The Barber of Seville, followed by three classic Isaac Albéniz pieces (Mallorca; Capricho Catalan; Tango) and Clarice Assad's 'Brasilerinhas'. After a refreshments interval, Hamish and Emma-Shay will continue with a series of exciting Australian pieces and new arrangements that juxtapose classical with other guitar styles: jazz, metal, bluegrass and even surf rock!
The bimonthly ACCS concerts run on the first Sundays of May, July, September and November. Next 2026 events are Keyboard Trust-supported virtuoso pianist, Sean Godden (6th Sept) and Duo Tanwen (flautist Ruby Howells, with harpist Bonnie Scott) on 1st Nov 2026.
