In 1791, Mozart was commissioned to write the Requiem by a wealthy music lover in remembrance of his wife. The Requiem has always been shrouded in mystery due to Mozart dying before he could complete this sacred work. His unfinished Requiem was performed at his funeral which could be said was written for himself. In 1792, his friend and student, Franz Xaver Süssmayr, completed the work after his death. The beautiful and haunting piece 'Lacrimosa' can be said to reflect the tears of those who mourned the death of this genius.
In 1815, Schubert wrote Mass in G Major when he was just 18 years old. He wrote this Mass in only six days and it is one of his most popular settings of the mass ordinary. The charming song-like melodic writing, especially in the 'Kyrie' and 'Credo', forms a magical counterpoint to more concertante passages in the 'Gloria' and the 'Sanctus'.
Both the Requiem and Mass in G Major will be played by a string orchestra and organ conducted by Jonathan Kingston. The choir will be accompanied by soloists performing in the glorious acoustics of the Grade I listed building, St Mary's Church Banbury.
