This fiery work features two halves of thrilling music that ooze peril, prayer and punishment from start to emphatically glorious finish. First performed in 1846, Mendelssohn’s Elijah is a vivid and captivating journey through the life of the prophet. As if all-consuming fear, ending a drought, almighty acts of God and fiery chariots weren’t enough to keep it interesting, Mendelssohn set it to stunning and uplifting music that, once heard, will not easily be forgotten.
