Tring Chamber Music Summer Season - ’Season’s End’ Sunday 15th September, Hastoe Village Hall 6.00pm (N.B. early start time) ‘SEASON’S END’ Howard Shelley piano Paul Barritt violin Garfield Jackson viola William Schofield cello Mozart Piano Quartet No 1 in g minor K478 Schubert String Trio No 2 in B flat D581 Schumann Piano Quartet in E flat Op 47 We welcome Howard Shelley again to our concerts to play some of our favourite works for piano and strings. Mozart wrote relatively few works in the minor key. When he does, it has a particular relevance (of ‘Storm and Stress’) and the key itself (g minor) is especially significant. This work approaches both symphonic status and piano concerto character at times. Between piano quartets we include the fine and rarely played four movement string trio of Schubert. This is music of ingenuous charm, warmth, and wealth of melody from a young composer, certainly exposing his own distinctive voice. When Schumann came to write his wonderful piano quartet, some 25 years later, music had changed beyond recognition. There is a sharing of themes, a lusciousness in the slow music, a joie de vivre in the fast music all of which contribute to the popularity of this piece, particularly given his deeply troubled life...
