Willesden Jewish Cemetery is the final resting place for over 29,000 people including an intriguing assortment of British Jews dating back to the Victorian era. They include Eliza Davis who challenged Charles Dickens over his anti-Semitism; scientist Rosalind Franklin; jeweller Harriet Samuel; several members of the Rothschild banking family; many Rabbis; servicemen and women; artists; scientists; entertainers and retailers: people from all walks of life. It is the first time that a still active Jewish cemetery invites visitors to discover the lives of people buried there and to explore the customs and history of London’s Jewish community. This orthodox Jewish cemetery, owned and looked after by the United Synagogue, is the only Jewish cemetery on England’s Register of Parks & Gardens of Special Historic Interest. Together with a few of its graves, its funerary buildings are Grade II listed. Visitors are advised that guided walks continue whatever the weather, so do come prepared.
