The central work in the concert is Will Todd’s Mass in Blue for which the choir will be joined by a jazz trio and vocalist from the Royal Academy of Music. This work, a setting in a jazz idiom of the Catholic Mass, was composed in 2003 and has fast become a modern choral classic, popular with choirs and their audiences in the UK and abroad. Music by three other contemporary composers completes the programme, namely: Stargazer by Alec Roth; Erik Ešenvald’s ethereal Northern Lights, where you can expect to hear not only the voices of the choir but also tuned wine glasses and hand chimes to evoke the glorious dance of the Aurora Borealis; and finally Jonathan Dove’s Passing of the Year with the choir’s own Stephen Ridge playing the virtuosic piano accompaniment...
