Cresswell Pele Tower, Cresswell, Morpeth NE61 5JU
Heritage Open Day: Are you related to an outlaw? Our 14th Century Pele Tower was built to keep out gangsters and rustlers in a period of Border anarchy. Does their blood run in your veins? Find out if your ancestors might have been involved. Charlton, Robson, Nixon, Armstrong, Scott - Familiar names with recent celebrity status - from the first man on the moon, to world cup winners, explorers, poets, and a US President. They can all trace their heritage back through history to a period of unrest on the Anglo-Scottish border. An almost forgotten but fascinating period of British History will be brought to life with displays, maps and family trees. Have a go at making a medieval tile, hear stories of myth and legend and of battles and conflict across the Marches, where people lived in fear of villainry, blackmail and terrorism and where the law always seemed to be on the other side. Expect costumes, tales and the occasional discharge of muskets or clash of steel on steel...
