Littledean Hall Grounds: Celts and Romans were here
Sun 15 Sep 24
Sun 15 Sep:1100-1700; Free Entry.
Littledean Hall, Newnham Road, Littledean, Cinderford GL14 3NR
Heritage Open Day: More excavations at the site have uncovered yet more evidence of the area being occupied before the Romans arrived in Britain. It is easy to see why this stunning location overlooking the river was chosen for a Roman sacred monument which is positioned for solar alignment. Explore the Roman remains in situ and the restored foundation remains of a Nymphaeum identified as a shrine to the goddess of the River Severn in the outer grounds of Littledean Hall. This is an archaeological site with investigation of the pre Roman Celtic, Bronze Age and Neolithic times. Recent excavations are now finished. There is an ingoing programme of site conservation which is expected to last for some time. Enjoy the lovely setting and learn about the unusual and rare finds made here since 1984 with a short walk to the wonderful view of the River Severn from Pleasant Stile...
