Sat 7 Sep:1000-1600; Free Entry.
Stokescroft, Cossack Square, Nailsworth, Stroud GL6 0DZ
Heritage Open Day: Stokescroft is a little altered Queen Anne house fronting onto Chestnut Hill. Dendrochronological dating of the roof timbers indicates the house in its present form dates back to 1705. In the early and mid-19th Century, the building was known as the Barracks – possibly a reference to Russian prisoners held there during the Crimean War - and it is thought to have then been in the ownership of Adrian Stokes, which may be the source of its present name Stokescroft. In 1889 it is referred to as Nailsworth's first flat for the elderly. However, in very poor condition by the 1960s, it was restored in the 1970s and reopened as commercial offices. In 2019 further restoration began and the building now runs as offices for the creative and media sectors. Join us during Saturday 7th to discover more about Stokescroft, and join a guided tour of the site...
