The Marches Choir present a Baroque choral and orchestral feast

St John’s Church, Bishops Castle SY9 5AF The Marches Choir are preparing a real musical feast from the Baroque period, to be performed at their upcoming concert on Saturday 23rd November at St John’s Church, Bishops Castle. The evening will feature the music of Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) and George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), both of whom composed music of great exuberance and which bursts with energy. The concert will commence with Handel’s ‘Zadok the Priest’ which has been performed at every coronation since 1727. The famous introduction, with its build-up to the powerful entry of the large choir, trumpets and drums, never fails to delight audiences. Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ is one of the most popular works of its time, and ‘Winter’ will be performed by the Marches Sinfonia, with David Gregory (violin) playing the dazzling solo. The choir will also perform ‘Dixit Dominus’, a work of great vivacity and energy, typical of Vivaldi’s style, with urgent rhythms, dynamic melodies and often startling harmonies. Other Vivaldi pieces in the programme include a flute concerto featuring local professional flautist Chris Lacey, as well as a striking setting of ‘Magnificat’, and ‘Beatus Vir’, a vehicle for displaying virtuoso soprano and alto soloists.
