On a stormy night, fate brings two strangers together, unleashing a love with the power to end worlds. Meanwhile, in the realm of the gods, an epic battle ensues between their ruler Wotan and his rebellious daughter, Brünnhilde. Conductor Antonio Pappano and director Barrie Kosky reunite to continue the mythical adventure that began with the glittering triumph of their production of Das Rheingold in 2023. You don't need to have seen the first opera, to appreciate this one which includes one of the best-known pieces of music from opera – The Ride of the Valkyries. This has become the most performed opera of Wagner's four opera Ring cycle loved and admired for its expressive and powerful music. The cycle is a colossal masterpiece composed over 26 years, from 1848 to 1874. The four epic operas fuse ancient Norse mythology with German and Scandinavian folk tales to tell the story of an all-powerful ring, and its pursuit by the leader of the gods, Wotan.
