The Drill Hall Lower Church Street, Chepstow NP16 5HJ The Royal Ballet’s celebration of British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon emphasises his remarkable range and highlights his verve and versatility, reflecting his career spanning ballet to musical theatre which has taken him from London to New York and beyond and earned him international acclaim. Four short distinctive works from one imagination. The luminscent and shimmering Fool's Paradise with intricate entwined partnering was the first of Wheeldon's many collaborations with composer Joby Talbot, while TheTwo of Us, set to the wistful songs of Joni Mitchell and created in lockdown for digital performance, shows a couple mostly apart. Us is a male duet built on chemistry and balance. An American in Paris is an adaptation of his Tony award winning 2015 Broadway musical production's big ballet scene turning it into a colourful standalone setpiece for the Royal Ballet. Set to Gershwin’s jazzy melodies, the musical is inspired by the 1951 film of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The ballet excerpt was Wheeldon’s take on one of the most memorable scenes from the film – an extended sequence in which the two central characters dance through Paris.
