This was the moment when painting first became as important as sculpture or metalwork, with ambitious projects to adorn the cathedral and the town hall as well as the private chapels of the wealthy. Artists created exquisite works with glittering gold backgrounds and emotional narratives, moving painting in Italy along the route towards the Renaissance. This special one-off lecture celebrates the groundbreaking exhibition at the National Gallery London, which comes to a close later in June (tickets are still available!).
