Beethoven and Haydn in Finchley

The programme consists of two masterpieces by composers at the height of their powers. Beethoven’s seventh symphony pulsates with energy; Wagner described it as the “apotheosis of dance”. An oasis of calm is provided by the well-known Allegretto which begins with the same note 13 played times! The ‘Harmoniemesse’, so-called because its orchestra employs unusually large wind and brass forces, was Haydn’s last major work.
