Crossness Pumping Station, Bazalgette Way, Abbey Wood, London SE2 9AQ
A wonderful day out for all the family at Crossness Pumping Station. The fun starts as soon as you arrive at Abbey Wood Station, with a ride on a vintage Routemaster Bus and our narrow gauge railway. Explore the spectacular Beam Engine House, opened in 1865 to pump the sewage out of South London, then relax and enjoy musical entertainment and an authentic Punch and Judy show over a pint of craft ale and an ice cream! Crossness Pumping Station is part of the original London Sewage network designed by engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette, which helped to clean up Victorian London and drive cholera out of the city. Learn all about the history of London’s sanitation, the Great Stink of 1858, and how London’s sewage system has grown and developed from the 1860s up to the present day. Crossness is a Grade 1 listed building, with four huge beam engines and spectacularly beautiful ironwork. It has appeared in many films and TV programmes, and has recently been voted one of the top ten percent of attractions worldwide by Tripadvisor in their Traveller’s Choice Awards...
