Heritage Open Day: A display of 13th – 14th century stained glass found in Bethlehem Street, Grimsby A recent archaeological dig at the rear of 17-21 Bethlehem Street, Grimsby opened a window into 700 years of Grimsby’s history with a large number of finds spanning this period being found. A short section of chalk block walling with 16th century brick inserted suggests a building of that period stood there, near to and in the same context numerous pieces of stained glass were found, which have been identified as 13th-14th century and from an ecclesiastical building. Is this, perhaps, the earliest? As the excavation is in close proximity to both Grimsby Minster (formerly St James) and the former St Mary’s, (demolished in the late 16th- early 17thcentury), could this be wastage of glass removed from the Churches in this period during restoration work?...
