Heritage Open Day: A quote from Harry W Smith: I have always been a lover of the beautiful and it has been my endeavour to leave Scarborough a little better than I found it. In 1897 very little of Scarborough's seafront had been developed. On the South side there were the Holbeck Gardens, the Spa and the Valley Gardens. The Marine Drive had not been built whilst on the north side there was nothing to attract visitors apart from the Royal Albert Drive and Clarence Gardens which had just been completed.
