Heritage Open Day: A rare chance to see inside Marlow's only Grade 1 listed building, a fine Georgian mansion lived in by a titled family and visited by several young royals escaping the restraints of the Windsor court. Marlow Place was probably built around 1720 by Alicia, the mother of the 1st Earl of Portsmouth John Wallop. His sister Mary was a lady-in-waiting to Princess Anne, a daughter of George II, and several Hanoverian princes visited the house, escaping the restraints of the Windsor court. The house has had many uses since then and the upper floors are currently offices. Our exhibition on the principal floor covers the period around the 1790s when it was owned by the super-rich Williams family, the founder being known as the Copper King.
