However, there existed a Helmsley Primitive Chapel, a former Quaker Friends Meeting on Bridge Street, for members in 1844. The current grand building's cornerstone was laid on 1 January 1901. A Wesleyan Chapel was built at Gate Helmsley in 1814. It was replaced by a new larger chapel in 1864. The Helmsley Primitive Methodist Society began meeting in a former Quakers Friends Meeting House in 1844 and continued to worship there until 1980. In 1932 there was a unification of the Primitive, Wesleyan and United Methodist churches.
