Wavertree Lock Up, Childwall Road, Wavertree, Liverpool L15 8JS Heritage Open Day: An octagonal sandstone lock up built over 200 years ago to house drunks and misbehaving locals, erected on the only common land found in Liverpool today i.e. Wavertree Green. At one time housed 2 families during Irish Famine. Wavertree's Lock-Up was built of yellow sandstone in 1796, at the expense of the villagers. Cholera victims' bodies were dumped inside to isolate them from the rest of the village, and in the 1840, the Lock-Up served as temporary accommodation for destitute Irish families trekking out from Liverpool into the surrounding countryside.
