Civil War tour of Newark, including the Queens Sconce

Heritage Open Day: Kevin Winter will lead a Civil War tour of Newark. Explore some of the places that were at the heart of key events, ending at the Queens Sconce. The tour will begin at the bandstand in Newark Castle, where the reason Newark became known as 'The Key to the North' can be seen. We will then visit some of the buildings that played a part in the towns Civil War history and remain standing. We will explore some of the characters, such as Baron Dohna, Hercules Clay and Prince Rupert who were significant players in Civil War Newark. After making our way around the town we will head back to the castle to see where Scottish muskets and cannon left their mark, before heading along the river towards the Queen's Sconce. This fortification, built to defend the town from Parliamentarian attack is the best preserved 17th century earthwork in the country...
