Heritage Open Day: Lace Making and shanty men in this historic chapel, the biggest in England. This light-filled building is the largest parochial chapel in England – but bigger than some cathedrals – and was built as a chapel-of-ease (‘easy to get to’) for St Margaret's Priory and parish church, which retained control over it. Most of the chapel was rebuilt between 1380 and 1410. Like many harbour churches, it is dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen and sailors. The chapel’s oldest feature is part of the tower dating back to 1225, incorporated into the 15th-century chapel which has huge windows, an amazing painted main door c.1400, an enormous font canopy, and the first Angel roof in East Anglia...
