Marshside Fogbell

Heritage Open Day: Opportunity to see and learn about the history of this small but unique building with a fascinating history, now in the stewardship of NW Heritage CIC and currently being restored. Seven Marshside men drowned after becoming disoriented in a thick fog whilst shrimping in January 1869. The calamity shook the close-knit fishing community, and a fogbell was set up on the shore to try to prevent a similar disaster from occurring. In 1896 the fogbell was rebuilt in its present location and helped to guide many local fishermen through the fog back to safety. After being left unused and bricked up for several decades, NW Heritage CIC managed to secure the site with the aim of restoring the building and turning it into a micro museum funded entirely by donations.
