Heritage Open Day: Wivenhoe Chapel Museum opened as the town's museum in 2015. One of the smallest museums in Essex, Wivenhoe Chapel Museum is located in the chapel of the town's new cemetery, built in the early 1900s. Amongst the exhibits is the clock which Captain Mathew Martin donated to St Mary’s Church in Wivenhoe early in the eighteenth century. Also on display are old photographs of the town. The new cemetery contains several Commonwealth War Graves and other interesting memorials. The old cemetery on the other side of Belle View Road opened in 1858. Members of the Corsellis family of Wivenhoe Hall are buried in a vault below an imposing obelisk and a memorial to local man William Oakley (1857-1918) who served in the US Navy, winning the Medal of Honor, was erected in 2019.
