Calke Abbey, Ticknall, Derby DE73 7LE Heritage Open Day: With peeling paintwork and overgrown courtyards, Calke Abbey is one of the National Trust's unique houses, where you can discover the tales of an eccentric family who amassed a vast collection of hidden treasures. Calke Abbey tells the story of the dramatic decline of the Harpur-Crewe's grand country estate. Spaces within the house and stableyards are little restored and instead preserved in a state of dereliction. Other rooms are grander, crammed full of collections, from art to natural history, which contrasts with abandoned rooms and objects no longer used.
