Heritage Open Day: A medieval church forever renewed provides examples of many styles of architecture, right up to the present day. St Michael's Church was built at the end of the 12th century and is Grade I listed. There's a 12th century door, 13th century chancel, 14th century tower, 19th century arcades and plenty more as well. Sir Thomas Bradeston, a friend and supporter of Edward III commissioned wall paintings celebrating his importance as well as providing moralising stories. To ensure he wasn’t forgotten, he provided effigies of himself and his wife to adorn the church. There’s a brass to the wife who survived him too, and effigies of his great-grandson and his wife, all from the 14th century. A rival Lord of the Manor left his mark too, and a story was created around him...
