Heritage Open Day: A chance to visit and hear more about the Caversham Baptist Church which opened in 1877 and was designed by the well- known architect Alfred Waterhouse Alfred Waterhouse is particularly known for his design of the Natural History Museum and Manchester Town Hall. Later in life, he settled in Reading where he designed Reading Town Hall, Reading School and several buildings around Reading University. The first Baptist Free Church in Caversham was designed by Waterhouse and built in 1865-6 across the road in what is now the West Memorial Hall and converted to apartments. Requiring more space, the church bought the triangular plot at the junction of three roads. Waterhouse was commissioned to design the building which, unusually, is set on a north/south axis.
